Bella and Gigi Hadid Are Not Overrated
Nowadays, everyone has “model” written their Instagram bio. I don’t blame agencies though, alot of these girls are drop-dead-gorgeous. But don’t worry, looks have not clouded my brain. I am still on the look out for real talent, and Gigi and Bella Hadid have it.
During April 2016, former fashion model, Rebecca Romijn, was asked by Entertainment Tonight her opinion on the new generation of models, such as Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid who are apparently famous for their social media presence and not runway experience.
Romijn replied, “I know a lot of people — legitimate fashion people — can’t stand it. Hate it that these, you know, social media stars are now the supermodels in fashion. They are not true supermodels”
According to Google, a supermodel is a, “successful fashion model who has reached the status of a celebrity.” Technically, wouldn’t the Hadids’ be considered “supermodels”? They are celebrities. But I think we should redefine “supermodel” to a model who reached celebrity status for their runway and editorial presence.
So why are the Hadid sisters famous? I know that their mother is former model, Yolonda Hadid, and I found out about them through social media. But I can’t prove that they rose to fame because of their social media presence.
Whenever I watch Youtube videos or read articles, most present day models are compared to OG’s such as Naomi Campbell, Adriana Lima and Gisele Bundchen. But we have to remember that we’re in a new era, which means leaving that in the past. Therefore, I am opened to see what this generation of models have to show us. I’m glad many girls have easier access to getting into agencies because of social media, but like I said before, I look for talent.
As a bystander, when I watch runways, I mostly focus on the clothes. Very rarely do I notice the model walking in them, and I think thats a red flag. Sometimes, I question the girls passion for modeling. I mean yeah it’s cool to be featured on a Nike billboard or walking in prestigious shows, but what happens in the long run? Wouldn’t you want to make your mark now so you’re a legend later?
I didn’t pay attention to runways until I saw a video of Naomi Campbell strutting the 2003 Victoria Secret Fashion Show (VSFW) . I was stunned by her walk because I have’t seen anything like it before. It was something new.
What do I love about it exactly? She’s not only drawing attention to herself, but the outfit aswell.
When Gigi and Bella rose to fame, I didn’t pay much attention. Until I watched Gigi walk in the VSFW 2015. Next to Candice Swanepoel, she’s one of the curviest models I’ve ever seen and she embraces her curves, which I absolutely love. I’m sure a lot of models have curves, I just haven’t noticed. Her walks outside of VSFW are laidback, natural but a little fun.
Just like Naomi Campbell, Gigi works her outfits aswell as her self.
I’ve rooted for Bella since her VSFW 2016 debut. But recently she was on the cover of Vogue Brasil and it was amazing. You’re probably thinking about she’s barely doing much posing wise, but I can’t think of anyone else who could pull of this same exact look. It’s a magazine cover that had made her memorable to me.
Overall, I do think the Hadid sisters are not overhyped and deserve to be atleast recognized. Do I think the Hadids’ are “supermodels”? No. With more runway presence and improvement, I think they have potential to be our generation “supermodels”.
